M12 connector
M12 connectors – for a perfect connection
If you want to establish a secure connection from devices or parts of devices, which provide the electrically conducting contacts, current and signal wires, M12 connectors are the perfect choice. Originally conceived for stable signal transmission from light carriers, sensors and proximity switches, the variety of applications of the M12 connectors today is almost limitless.
While the M12 connector has been used in automation technology as the standard for installations for a long time, a large number of application-specific developments in device technology can be connected with the M12 connector. Circular connectors with M12 connection are also used for highly sensitive applications in power electronics.
Thanks to the international standardisation of industrial connectors for sensors, actuators, field buses and in network technology, the M12 connector has proven itself as a reliable connection system.

M12 data connectors – an important industrial connector
With a metric locking thread in different versions and codings, the M12 connector can be installed for a large number of applications. The various types of M12 Profinet connector allow a respective individual connection of individual applications and thus fulfil the many different requirements.
- M12 Data connectors, M12 Power connectors
- The M12 Ethernet connector provides frictionless information exchange between two devices.
- The M12 Profibus connector serves as a robust link between sensor, the electrical signal and actuator, the moving component.
M12 connector pinouts
While the designation M12 stands for the thread size, the M12 connector pinout varies and depends on the respective coding. As a result of the permanent connector, the installation withstands vibrations and is secured against tearing. Through additional seals, the M12 connector pinout is protected against external influences such as dust and moisture. As each Profinet connector pinout is individually fitted with separate insert blocks, mistakes cannot occur when connecting or inserting.
The M12 connectors are available in ten different codings / pinouts. So that the connector can also be allocated after installation, the pinout is defined by colour. High pin numbers, for example the M12 connector with 12 pins, reliably meet even complex signal requirements.
Different codings of the M12 connectors
The M12 connector coding differs in terms of design. Consequently, the different requirements can be satisfied in full.
- M12 connector a-coded: A feature of the pinout is a small camber, which guarantees that connector and socket glide safely over each other, for sensor connectors and device connectors it ensures the signal or electricity supply.
- M12 connector b-coded: The design is characterised by a block on the side, which is only penetrated by a small camber. Usually, the M 12 b-coded connectors is 5-pin. For fieldbus interfaces, it ensures the transmission of data.
- M12 connector d-coded: The d-coded connector is fitted with two slot-and-key connections arranged at an angle of 90°. With 230 volts, they serve as the standard in industrial Ethernet, overwhelmingly for use as a power cable.
- M12 connector k-coded: The connector for maximum voltage for a supply of 630 volts and 12 amps.
- M12 connector l-coded: The new coding guarantees a power supply with a low operating current for moving components. Four protruding sockets shield individual pins from each other.
- M12 connector s-coded: For alternating-current applications, power transmission of up to 630 volts / 12 amps is possible.
- M12 connector t-coded: For alternating-current applications, the connector ensures power transmission of up to 630 volts / 12 amps.
- M12 connector x-coded: As a further development of the d-coded design, the connectors for broadband transmission cope with a data rate of up to 10 GBit/s with Ethernet interfaces.
Available pin numbers for M12 cable connectors
Different in numbers permit detailed information transfer in a compact cable and facilitate quick and reliable connections, even in a small space. The following pin numbers are available for maximum data transmission with M12 connectors from Phoenix Contact:
- M12 connector 3-pin
- M12 connector 4-pin
- M12 connector 5-pin
- M12 connector 8-pin
- M12 connector 12-pin
