NYM installation cable – the sheathed cable for electrical installations
The NYM cable is mainly used in trades where electrical installations need to be carried out in domestic or industrial environments. For this reason, the NYM cable is one of the cables used most often for connection to power sources. The installation cable is used to safely connect electrical consumers such as standard sockets, lamps and their light switches. It can be installed in almost any environment and provides absolute safety. The green-yellow protective conductor ensures that the dangerous contact voltage on the conductive metal housing is safely discharged to earth. Both indoors and outdoors, the specified installation instructions must be observed to ensure a failure-free power supply to the various installations.

Convincing product features of the NYM-J cable
The NYM-J electrical cable is available in three- and five-core versions and in various cross-sections. With regard to the cable construction, the strands are designed from bare copper steel, a solid copper conductor (stripped wire surrounded by filler compound) in a single-wire round conductor construction according to VDE 0295. The cores are stranded in layers for magnetic shielding with optimum lay lengths and have a gusset filling. For the power supply to be installed, the cable can be laid with a core diameter of 10.4 mm. The core insulation consists of solid polyvinyl chloride (PVC). With its thermal properties, the construction cable can be used at a temperature range from 5° C to 70° C. In terms of fire behaviour, the cable has self-extinguishing and flame-retardant properties according to IEC 60332-1-2. The outer sheath in light grey corresponds to RAL 7035 while the cores inside are coloured according to VDE 0293-308. The permissible nominal voltage is 300V between the outer conductor and the earth potential and 500V between the outer conductors.
Definition of the product designation NYM-J and NYM-O
The NYM product designation provides information about the exact cable type, its mode of construction and its ideal intended purpose. The order of the letters in the cable marking indicates how the cable is constructed from the inside. The individual letters provide information about the properties assigned to the cable and the materials used. The NYM-J cable can be translated as follows:
- N – standard cable
- Y – insulation of the cores made of PVC (solid plastic insulation)
- M – sheathed cable
- J – with internationally marked green-yellow protective conductor
- O – no green-yellow protective conductor
Application areas of the NYM-J cable
The Lapp sheathed cable is primarily used in domestic and industrial installations. This ensures safe electrical wiring in new buildings and conversions of residential buildings, industrial buildings and also in the agricultural sector. The cables can be laid on-wall, in-wall, in masonry and concrete as well as in cable ducts or even in pipes. Safe installation can be carried out in dry, damp or wet rooms. This is why the cable is also sometimes referred to as a damp-proof cable. It can be embedded in vibrated, shaken and tamped concrete without any hesitation. The application in outdoor areas must not be carried out in the ground (use an NYY underground cable for this), but free laying is possible, provided that the wire is protected from direct sunlight.
