What is a selector switch / rotary switch?
Compared to a foot switch or push-button switch, they are activated by a manual rotation of the control element. Depending on the purpose, for which selector switches are used, they must be able to move to, if applicable, multiple switch positions. Among other things, the following types are used in addition to the classic rotary switch 2 positions: Rotary switch 3 positions, as well as rotary switch 4 positions / Rotary switch 4 positions.
How does a selector switch / rotary switch work?
The internal switch contacts are opened or closed by a shaft. Upon activation, the contact on the shaft is moved between the contact elements. To keep a switch position, the switch locks in place. As is usual with other types of switch, there are also other spring rotary switches that return to the original position after activation.
What are selector switches / rotary switches needed for?
Rotary switches are used in the most varied of areas of application. In a simple version as an on/off switch, they open or close an electric circuit. Complex status sequences of electronic devices or tools can be controlled with multiple pin rotary switches. In these cases they act, for example, simultaneously as an on-off switch, regular speeds or activate other functions.
How is a selector switch / rotary switch connected?
Blade connectors in the size 2.8mm x 0.8mm are widespread for connection by cable lug. Other models come with M12 connectors. Depending on the area of application, it is recommended that rotary switches with solder terminals or solder eyes are used.
